actúaloop competition is an initiative launched by Frontiers, an international company dedicated to the publication of scientific articles "open-access" with allies such as Nature Publishing Group, in collaboration with the Center of Support for Technological Innovation (CAIT) of the Technical University of Madrid (UPM).

actúaloop: apostando por el futuro de las redes sociales de investigación

Crear y compartir archivos multimedia, conocer el lugar idóneo donde publicar las investigaciones, o compartir el equipo utilizado en las mismas, será posible gracias a la I edición de la Competición actúaloop, una iniciativa puesta en marcha por el Centro de Apoyo a la Innovación Tecnológica CAIT – UPM en colaboración con la start-up suiza Frontiers. Actúaloop nace con objetivo de potenciar la innovación en las redes sociales de investigación, especialmente en Loop, la red puesta en marcha por Frontiers.

La Universidad Politécnica de Madrid acogió la Ceremonia de Entrega de Premios Finales de la I edición de esta competición en la que seis  proyectos, seleccionados en una primera fase entre un total de más de 30, optaban a estos tres galardones, de 5.000, 3.000 y 2000 euros respectivamente.

El primer premio fue para IDeM, una aplicación promovida por Enrique Barras, de la ETSI Telecomunicación UPM, que integra en Loop distintas herramientas para crear y  compartir contenidos sin tener que recurrir a plataformas externas, haciendo de ella una red más interactiva.

El segundo galardón fue para Journal Advisor, proyecto promovido por Cristian Moral, de la ETSI Informáticos UPM, que facilita a los investigadores la compleja labor de decidir el mejor lugar donde publicar sus investigaciones gracias a una sencilla e intuitiva herramienta visual multicriterio.

Finalmente, el tercer puesto fue para ARES, promovido por Gregorio Romero de la ETSI Industriales UPM, una plataforma que permite a los investigadores a compartir no solo sus publicaciones, sino también los equipos que utilizan para llevarlas a cabo, lo que sirve de partida para investigaciones y colaboraciones futuras.

Mejorar las redes sociales de investigación

Otros tres proyectos fueron reconocidos por su contribución a mejorar las redes sociales de investigación. En primer lugar, Frontiers Translate,  de la ETSI Sistemas Informáticos UPM, que propone traducir los artículos de Loop a los distintos idiomas a través de un sistema de puntos y premios, y que recibió una mención especial debido a la juventud de sus integrantes.

El jurado también premió a SMART Protocols,  de la ETSI Informáticos UPM, que permite a los investigadores generar y recuperar información a través de los protocolos experimentales con precisión; y Loop App, de la ETSI Telecomunicación, que por su parte propone integrar todos los servicios de Loop en una aplicación móvil, facilitando el acceso a la misma.

El acto contó con Kamila Markram, cofundadora y CEO de Frontiers, como ponente principal. Durante su intervención insistió en cómo la innovación e investigación conducen el crecimiento del PIB a nivel mundial, y en la importancia de un acceso eficiente, libre y abierto a publicaciones de investigación de calidad, requisitos indispensables para el crecimiento económico y para un futuro sostenible.

Kamila estuvo acompañada por Jon Murua, Product Manager de Loop, que incidió en cómo ésta red social busca dar facilidades a los investigadores; así como por Gonzalo León, Director del Centro de Apoyo a la Innovación Tecnológica de la UPM, encargado de anunciar el lanzamiento de una nueva edición de la competición actúaloop en el mes de septiembre, lo que refleja la firme apuesta de la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid por el futuro de las redes sociales de investigación.

Fallados los Premios, se inicia la cuarta y última fase de la competición, en la que los tres proyectos ganadores podrán acceder a los servicios de la pre-incubadora de empresas del CAIT y de Frontiers, que ofrece la posibilidad de contar con un espacio físico en un entorno profesional, contacto con inversores y capital riesgo, y licencias para el uso de tecnología. A ello se suma la posibilidad de acceder a una beca o un puesto fijo en Frontiers.

[June, 23rd] Best Projects of the First Edition of the Competition actúaloop

First Competition actúaloop Awards Ceremony 

We already have date for the actúaloop Awards Ceremony of the First edition of the Competition for Innovation in Research Social Networks actúaloop. Will will celebrate it on June 23rd, at 18.30 in the afternoon. And the place of the event is the Sala C of the ETSII UPM (see map)

During the ceremony, the three best projects from phase 2 will be selected as winners of the competition and they will receive a prize of 5.000€ (the first one), 3.000€ (the 2nd), and 2.000 € (the 3rd one). We will also deliver other three non-cash awards to the finalists of the Competition. 

These three winner projects will move into the final phase where they will have access to Pre-incubation services from CAIT UPM in order to support the technology developed. Moreover, they will have contact with investment figures (including business angels, venture capitalists, etc.), licenses for use of technology or know-how, and they will even have the possibility for internships and permanent job positions in a multinational company as Frontiers. 

The attendance is free and open to the public, but it must be confirmed filling out this form.

Projects that compite for the final prizes:

Journal Advisor: orientation visualization system for would-be authors about the most appropriate venues for publication of a paper; serving to editors and reviewers as well in their decision about submitted papers.

Formalization of experimental protocols: SMART Protocols allows researchers to accurately generate and retrieve information from experimental protocols. It makes possible for publishers to expose ready-to-use data/content over the web as well as to deliver a content-based recommendation service for researchers.

IDeM (Innovation, Dissemination et Multimedia): it proposes to introduce in Loop a new layer that enables online paper enrichment using advanced multimedia resources, as well as real-time communication and discussion facilities between authors and readers. 

ARES: This idea proposes sharing between researchers not only different papers and publications but also the equipment that they have used to research. 

Loop App: This idea attempts to include all Loop services in a mobile application. With the app, users can quickly consult articles, manage contacts and so on. 

Frontiers Translate: This is a Community idea focused on Translation that proposes to create a reward system based on points, which will allow everyone on the platform to have the same opportunity to grow in it.

Kamila Markram confirmed as guest speaker at actúaloop Final Awards Ceremony

Kamila Markram is a neuroscientist at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne and Frontiers’ CEO and co-founder. She is on a mission to make research freely available for the benefit of humanity, and popularize science and the people behind the discoveries. 

Kamila obtained her MSc in Psychology, summa cum laude, from the Technical University Berlin in 2003, completed her masters-thesis at the Max-Planck Institute for Brain Research in Frankfurt; and obtained an award-winning PhD degree in Neuroscience at the EPFL in 2006.

She frequently speaks on topics related to autism, Open Science and the future of scholarly publishing, including the National Academy of Sciences, Science Foo Camp and the Euroscience Open Forum. Moreover, she co-developed "The Intense World Theory of Autism” which proposes that autism is the result of a “super”-brain that perceives, absorbs and feels too causing autistic people to withdraw from an overly intense world. This theory fundamentally challenges the established dogmas in autism research and was featured in popular science magazines and TV documentaries. It was most recently featured in a documentary by Academy Award winning film-maker Roger Ross Williams in his current project Life, Animated.

[February 11th] 1st actúaloop Competition, Awards Ceremony

 Awards and finalists of the Competition

Yesterday, February 11th, we finished the First Phase of the actúaloop Competition with the celebration of the Award Ceremony. Eight of the thirty-one ideas presented have been selected to go into the second phase of Development of the Ideas. 

69 participants have compited for this prize, and the level of the ideas (31 in total) presented thas been really hight. So we would like to thank all the participants their effort, and congratulate the winners!

Orientation visualization system for would-be authors about the most appropriate venues for publication of a paper; serving to editors and reviewers as well in their decision about submitted papers.

Formalization of experimental protocols

A direct connection between researchers and charitable foundations. Foundations that have money to research their illnesses, they can create their profiles on the platform and introduce their needs through tags. Researchers can put tags on their research. 

RESEARCH HUB 

José Antonio Quevedo Muñoz (ETSI Sist. Informáticos UPM)

"A network to rule them all." A social hub - search tool, focused on researchers. The goal is to increase researchers productivity through an unified social network viewer, search engine and publication tools.

Frontiers Translate 

José Antonio González Robles (ETSI Sist. Informáticos UPM)

This is a Community idea focused on Translation that proposes to create a reward system based on points, which will allow everyone on the platform to have the same opportunity to grow in it.

Next Thursday, February 11th, we will celebrate the award ceremony of the First edition of the Competition for Innovation in Research Social Networks actúaloop.

During the ceremony, the three best ideas will receive a prize of 1.000 € each. We will also deliver other five non-cash awards to the finalists of the Competition. 

All of this ideas will move into the second phase where they will be developed and they will receive mentoring of academic tutors.

¿Qué hay que hacer para participar?

¿La idea tiene que estar desarrollada antes del 7 de enero?

¡NO! Sólo tienes que rellenar un breve formulario definiendo la idea. En el desarrollo se trabajará en etapas posteriores.

¿Importa el grado de desarrollo?

No, en esta primera etapa sólo importan las buenas ideas entorno a la red social loop.

¿Puedo presentar más de una idea?

Sí, todas las que quieras. Pero ten en cuenta que para darse de alta y cumplimentar un formulario es necesario hacerlo con una dirección de correo; si quieres presentar más de una idea deberás hacerlo con correos diferentes.

¿Me puedo presentar sólo?

Sí, te puedes presentar de forma individual o por equipos. Recuerda que en esta competición pueden participar profesores, investigadores, alumnos de grado, máster y doctorado de la UPM.

Soy ex-alumno de la UPM ¿puedo presentarme?

En esta competición es requisito que al menos un miembro del equipo sea miembro en activo de la UPM. Así que si eres antiguo alumno y formas equipo con otra persona que se encuentre vinculada con la UPM en la actualidad ¡puedes participar sin problemas!

¿Presentar la idea te compromete a desarrollarla? ¿Qué pasa si no tengo tiempo?

No es obligatorio seguir en la competición, aunque hayas sido seleccionado. Es decisión tuya.

¿Dónde puedo ver lo que ya se ha desarrollado por parte del equipo técnico de Loop?

En el portal del desarrollador: https://loop-developers.frontiersin.org/

¿Sólo se premia al mejor desarrollo?

No. En una primera etapa se premian las 3 mejores ideas propuestas con 1.000 € cada una. En la fase posterior se premiarán los tres mejores desarrollos con 5000€, 3000€ y 2000€ respectivamente.

¿Tengo que tener todos los conocimientos para saber desarrollar la idea?

No, no es necesario. En el caso de que tu idea resulte seleccionada, Frontiers te brindará el apoyo, la formación, los medios y los contactos que permitan convertir tu idea en realidad.

actúaloop, nuevo reto para la Comunidad UPM

En el pasado, los descubrimientos eran resultado del trabajo individual. Hoy, sin embargo, es una actividad colaborativa entre todos los investigadores. Y es aquí donde aparece Frontiers, una herramienta para hacer más sencillo este trabajo.

Frontiers sigue la tendencia del "open access" que tiene como filosofía hacer que las publicaciones estén disponibles para todos; y es de esta idea de donde surge Loop, una herramienta para facilitar la colaboración y dar visibilidad a las investigaciones. 

En línea con el objetivo de actúaupm de apoyar la innovación abierta y los retos tecnológicos, hemos decidido apoyar a Frontiers lanzando la Competición actúaloop. Usando como sitio de pruebas la UPM, Loop quiere ser una red social hecha por y para los investigadores. Es fundamental conocer las necesidades de éstos y para ello les animan a participar en la Competición.

Bajo este planteamiento todo el mundo que se sienta capaz de dar soluciones o mejorar esta red social puede participar en la Competición, desde los investigadores que en el futuro le darán uso, hasta alumnos de grado o máster que quieran poner en práctica los conocimientos aprendidos en su carrera académica.

Until 7th 2016, open call for the I Edition of actúaloop Competition

actúaloop competition is an initiative launched by Frontiers, an international company dedicated to the publication of scientific articles "open-access" with allies such as Nature Publishing Group, in collaboration with the Center of Support for Technological Innovation (CAIT) of the Technical University of Madrid (UPM).

The main goal of the competition is to identify and promote talent, challenging entrepreneurs and technical teams to develop projects that integrate third-party services in a professional network for researchers, as Loop. Additionally, to detect differential business ideas and to contribute to the development of business models, are other goals to achieve.

Loop is a professional network, developed by Frontiers, to maximize the impact of researchers by increasing the readership and dissemination of their articles. It is an open, collaborative and inclusive platform, where researchers have all the tools at their disposal to enhance academic discovery and impact.

The competition is directed to teachers, researchers, degree and graduate students (master or doctoral students) from the Technical University of Madrid, and participants may present their ideas individually or as a team.

Why to take part in the actúaloop Competition?

Beyond the economic prizes amounting to 13.000€, the best 10 ideas will be promoted for an incubation phase to develop them with the support, training, resources and advice of Frontiers and UPM. Moreover, actúaloop finalists will have access to contacts with Investment Figures, licences for use of technology or know-how, and the possibility of a job in a multinational company as Frontiers.

The winner will be awarded 5.000 € and the best 10 ideas will be promoted for an incubation phase to develop them. In addition, participants can have access to business angels as well as job opportunities in an exciting multinational environment.
